How To Get a Whole New
Wardrobe Without Spending a Dime
With the economy getting worse
each day, it is becoming necessary to not only save more money but
spend less even on essentials. Buying new clothes for summer
is not an option anymore for most. But don’t get down in the
dumps about wearing that old frock or button-up! With these
alteration tips, you will be on your way to wowing friends with your
new outfits—without buying new clothes!
First things first: gather
your materials. This includes thread, sewing needles, your
sewing machine, measuring tape, pins, scissors, etc. Anything
that may be needed to alter your clothing should be placed nearby,
easily accessible. Next, sift through your closet and pick out
clothing that says “summer.” Anything brightly colored,
light and airy, or earth-toned will work. Try to stay away
from dark colors or heavy materials as those will be neither
fashionable nor enjoyable to wear in summer.
Now comes the fun (and
possibly frustrating) part: alterations! Begin with the
simpler items such as skirts or pants. Long skirts or pants
can easily be cut to just above the knee, or at the thigh.
After you cut the length off, hem the bottom of the fabric and you
suddenly have a new skirt or cute pair of shorts to strut about.
Found a long sleeve shirt? You can cut the sleeves off and
re-shape the arm holes to be a tank top or t-shirt. Want a
little more flair? Cut the arm holes above the shoulders, cut
some fabric off, and tie the sleeves above the shoulders.
Even an old flannel shirt can
be transformed into a sassy cover up. Cut the sleeves just
below elbow length and hem. Roll the up two or three times.
Cut the bottom of the shirt off, hem, and use the extra fabric as a
belt or hair accessory. Use your imagination, play fashion
designer, and have fun. Before you know it, your friends will
be asking you to pass on your tips!
